Alright welcome to the udemy income report it is Friday December 28th a very windy Las Vegas today and in today's income report I want to talk about the email that I sent out yesterday as well as a couple other things so this is gonna be a very exciting income report this morning because the numbers did all kinds of fun stuff last night so before we do that I'm at my udemy profile page udemy.com/user/johnelder3 and you can see total students jumped up to forty five thousand five hundred and four same courses thirty seven and reviews 2347 right off the bat you'll notice that remember yesterday I was talking about tweaking my thumb net course thumbnail images and you can see I went ahead and did some of those I think I got about 20 21 22 something like that of the 37 done yesterday I'll probably work on a few more of them today
and round them out some of them I'll be leaving like this course is selling like gangbusters right now so I don't want to touch it same thing with this course it's selling very very well at the moment I'm not gonna touch it until sales start to slow down you know if if sales are doing well why why tinker with the thing but you can see I did the same theme in all of these it's just me here on the on the left hand side and I'm doing the same you know cheesy pose in the future I'll probably change this to a better image but this is the one that I had available so I slapped it in there and then on the right side is the the old course image basically I just you know resized it and put it over there so I think this is going to do very very well but we'll see in the next month or so that'll tell whether or not it does well or not so the
big thing I want to talk about is the email that I sent out yesterday the promotional email but before we do that let's spend a couple of minutes looking at the numbers because they are exciting yesterday we had 31 courses sold which is much higher even than anything we've done in the last couple of weeks or so so 31 now some of these were attributed to the promotional email that I sent out and I'll talk about that in a minute so the money earned 204 dollars fantastically good best day so far this month since I've been recording these income reports at least two hundred four dollars and now that came to six dollars and 59 cents now why was the per course so much higher because I sent out that promotional email and we got about I don't know ten or so people click the link in the email and sign up for my course so wait.you to me
when you send out a promotional email with your own coupon codes attached you get like 99% of that income so I'm selling a course for $9.99 I get like nine dollars and change of that goes straight to me so per course I I get a lot more so that's why this the average earned per course poor per course is so much higher yesterday so but here's something interesting refunds dramatically shot up thirty almost thirty dollars in refunds now the reason why that is is because had to do with the promotional email so I got three refunds from the promotional email that I sent out and at nine dollars each that's twenty seven dollars and change that's why it's about thirty dollars difference here now why did I get those well it's kind of my own fault and it's actually a good thing so somebody I won't say who signed up for three of my courses using
the promotional email links that I sent out yesterday so that's nine nine and nine dollars $9.99 $9.99 and $9.99 so that's you know say thirty bucks I offer I have a website Kota me calm where I offer all of my courses for $49 and and I mention those I mentioned that in the bonus lecture of every course on udemy so the very last lecture you can put your own marketing and your own promotional things in it they allow you to do that so in that video in all my courses I say if you like this course go to my website Kota me calm and get all of my courses for one low price well this person did that they saw they bought through my courses they went through one of them saw that email or that promotion cancelled the three refunded the three that they'd
bought on udemy went over to my website coded me bought all my courses for fifty bucks and so I got thirty dollars in refunds on you to me but fifty dollars in income on my website so I'm you know twenty dollars net ahead actually I'm fifty dollars net ahead really think about it so that's why the refunds jumped up so when I saw that I was like oh my gosh what happened but then I looked into it and I realized that that's what this person it did and I'm totally fine with that because I'll take $50 over thirty dollars any day so that's why those numbers a little bit different total income 1583 looking good now we saw four more days left in the month so I'm feeling a lot better about this low number you know December is always low versus sold three fifty five total reviews one forty five and then promotional activity so made about a
hundred dollars it was ninety dollars yesterday now it's a hundred and ninety basically so it was about ten people click the promo link which is a lot more than I thought was gonna happen you know I mentioned yesterday that when I send out a blanket promo like this they usually don't get much of a result and this is actually better than I expected much better than I expected so I also mentioned that I thought that I had sent out a promo email at the beginning of the month turns out I had not so I still have one promo you email left to send so I'm gonna send that next Monday or Tuesday I haven't decided 30th or 31st and it's gonna be the same email that I sent out yesterday it'll just be like a last chance last chance to get this you know deal that I mentioned last week so I it'll probably do usually when I do that a follow-up
email it does a percentage of what the first one did so if this one did a hundred bucks this one will probably do forty or fifty bucks if we're lucky or it could surprise us and do even more just depends so very very cool and very happy with that so now let's look at that email that I sent out and here it is I said I was gonna maybe put an image I went ahead and made an image it's ridiculous it looks stupid but it's kind of funny so I like it and you'll notice it's just this image this image of me and I just photoshopped a stupid hat on and then you know slap some happy new-year next to it and you can see it's white so it sort of blends in so here's the email that I sent out it just says first of all the subject is New Year's resolution : learn to code with John elder so I'm I really brand myself in all of my courses so if you've
taken a course for me in the past you probably remember John elder and so that's why I like to put my name in the subject so if people know because people get bombarded with these emails from you to me instructors so anyway you can stand out is important so do that and it says I wanted to take a moment to wish you and your family happy holiday and a happy holiday and ring in the New Year with a special discount on all my coding courses grab any course from now to the new year for just $9.99 each it says grab any course any of my courses for nine in and I'm with coupon code John elder and then here I just list all my courses and each of these links has that coupon code embedded in it so if you click on it you'll get that special price and you can see I I sort of broke them down by sort of category HTML CSS M bootstrap Django and Python
just flat-out Python programming Ruby and Ruby on Rails databases then JavaScript PHP Ubuntu Linux and cryptocurrency stuff this is just sort of my last these things don't go in any other category so I just sort of lump them all together and then as says there's a reason why over 45,000 of you have taken my courses is never cheaper than right now to learn a new skill and change your life now is the time to make your New Year's resolution why not resolve to learn a new skill that can change your life let's learn to code and then my name and then a PS I always put a PS at the bottom not just for you me emails any email marketing or direct mail marketing that I ever do you always put a PS at the end that's just copywriting 101 so says again take advantage the offer to grab a nine ninety a coupon using code John elder and that's it so we
can't yet see open rates and things like that those numbers are still coming in so when I get those numbers I'll pass them along but yeah and I just did this straight from the udemy announcement section and I send it out to everybody who's taking any of my courses so I did not target it in any way I just blasted it out to anybody and so that's pretty cool finally the last thing to look at is reviews let's see here where we go there we go reviews we got only two so Raymond and looks like go Z so let's take a quick look at these okay so where are we at here you so there's the gozi so we got looks like four and a half stars from him five stars there see that it ah we got three three reviews let's change that and then a four star and then there's Raymond so let me pull this back up very quickly so yeah that was a mistake three
reviews save that so pretty good got a couple of maybe one bad review today this morning now this morning we got a bunch of really good reviews as well and I'll go over these in the next tomorrow's income report but look at this we got this one and this one right here the media player controls are a joke I don't have anything to do with that that's you to me and the instructors said a few things in the first video that are subjectively not true that is absolutely not true they don't know what they're talking about so I actually flagged this one for abuse and because when somebody leaves a bad review based on something you to me does not based on something that I do udemy is pretty good about removing those bad reviews so hopefully in the next couple of days this review will drop off and we'll look at this again in the next
couple of days and see other than that don't look we got a couple of really good a bunch of five stars and then you know some really good big text e ones there so we'll talk about those in the next few days well tomorrow I guess so actually not tomorrow we'll talk about that Monday because tomorrow is Saturday and there probably won't be a income report on Saturday don't do them on the weekend but it's sort of the end of the year so maybe I'll do one we'll see so anyway exciting day yesterday a lot of fun $200 I also sold a whole bunch of memberships on my own personal website Kota me calm I haven't talked about that yet in any of these reports but like I said I have my own website where all my courses are hosted locally that you can sign up for so a bunch of people signed up for that and a bunch of people signed up for my courses on udemy so yesterday was a very good day financially so we're happy about that so hopefully
