What's going on guys welcome to the daily udemy income report the show where I talk about making money on you to me walk you through what's working for me and teach you how to do the same thing my name is John Elder from Courserapy.com and today is Tuesday January 15th 2019 and in today's episode I want to talk about what to do when your courses get pirated and posted on some other website but before we do that let's look at yesterday's numbers so yesterday was the 14th we had 14 courses sold and made 81 dollars which is very very good especially since the main new year´s udemy sale has ended so we expect sales to really taper off but any $1 yesterday is pretty good now that was only 14 courses so that came to five dollars and 79 cents a course which is is pretty good we had one refund extra from the day before and 12 reviews we'll take a look at those in just a minute

to date 1171 dollars and 18 cents pretty good 314 courses sold throughout the month 115 total reviews and promotional activity bobbed up to $60 and 80 cents so we had one of my courses sold using an old promo code you know these promo codes float around you sent out an email maybe it's a YouTube video whatever we got one of those so that helped bring up the price per course average a little bit and also just the general sales yesterday were higher because the new year sale had ended so total enrollment one hundred twelve thousand six hundred ninety eight and we're back to four point five two on the average rating so it looks like my you know my profile page really quickly udemy.com /user four slashed John elder three and we still have the best seller badge on our Postgres database course which is fantastic love to see that but the highest rating badge from this

rails course has disappeared and the highest rating badge from this Jango course is still gone it's been gone for a week or so this rails course it's nice to have the badge but it wasn't helping in any way I'd had that highest rated badge for a long time for this course and we're halfway through the month fourteen days as of yesterday and I think I'd sold three copies of that course through the whole month so having the highest rating badge for that core wasn't helping me at all now it's gone I mean that's bad but we'll keep an eye on it and see how that goes now before we get into the thing I want to talk about in this episode private or piracy I want to look real quickly we're starting to see yesterday and then into today this 1901 top rated coupon code so there's some other sort of minor sale going on and we're seeing higher sales prices so 1499 1198 while it's not with it 1199

1199 11 I know so my cut of that is obviously higher and that's one of the big reasons why I pull back the numbers again we made more money yesterday and had a higher earn per course you know when you to me was running the New Year sale we were routinely seeing three dollars three dollars three dollars three dollars sometimes four dollars so it's nice to see it back up to five and all that good stuff so in this episode oh wait we have a look at reviews real quick okay so 4f stars 5 stars 5 stars I'm just gonna fly through these real quickly yeah somebody keeps texting me for a half stars 5 stars this is great so far I'm learning and more importantly it's not scaring me away that's cool I'm hungry to take the next steps that's a great review so 5 stars they're 4 stars fast clear and interesting very cool a very good and succinct introduction to Django even got a glimpse of what

bootstrap can provide in relation to building websites very cool three and a half stars not a great review five stars four stars and it's okay and I think this is the last one now if I still this morning so pretty cool not bad so for the rest this video I want to talk about something that's kind of important and that really freaks out a lot of instructors especially new instructors and that's Pratt I keep saying privacy piracy right when somebody steals your course off of udemy now this is very easy for them to do they can if you in your settings you can allow people to download your videos or not I have mine set to not so by default they can't download them but in the mobile app you can download them no matter what I think but even if you couldn't it's very easy to steal videos even if you know me doesn't give a student the ability to download it easily it's still pretty easy

to kind of hack a hack around it a little bit and get those videos and what people often do is they'll download all the videos of the courses and then re-edit them to make one big long video so instead of you know twenty five five-minute videos they make one hour and a half long video or two hour video and then they post it on YouTube or torrent sites or other websites that have you know pirated courses so the first thing I want to say about this is it is going to happen you think it's not going to happen to you but it will mine get pirated all day every day it's just how it is and you're never ever gonna get all of them removed from the internet when you find them you can sort of get them taken down and I'll talk about that in just a minute but it's one really hard to find them now sometimes a student will email me and say hey I was looking on this website and I see your

course listed for free I think somebody stole it that's cool that happens more often than you would think but also from time to time you want to just kind of look yourself Google the titles of your course Google the title plus free course Google the title plus complete course Google the title plus udemy course or udemy course for free or free udemy course you know little things like that a Google the title plus your name you know intro to Django for web development by John elder full course something like that and you'll get a list of sites that had the the course listed and YouTube is another big one so just this morning I was searching for something else on YouTube and one of my videos popped up and I was like wait that's my video but the person was this Juxt fun person I'm like that's not me you know and I looked and it's an hour and half long so this is obviously my

entire how to build a cryptocurrency news site with Django and Python it's the complete course and it's just listed on YouTube and look at this it's got 612 use it's got three comments already people are replying to comments right that's crazy you know that is horrible the great thing about this though is YouTube is very good about removing videos for copyright complaints now you could do it a couple of different ways you can file a complaint DCM a DMCA whatever copyright claim with YouTube and they'll take it down I don't suggest you do that there's an even easier way and I'll talk about that in just a second but so when I found this I started kind of I spent five minutes looking for some other courses and I found another one here with 300 views and it's an hour and 11 minutes and it has some content there are some comments crazy right here's this is the very first course I ever

created learning Ruby on Rails for web development it's five hours long 436 views this it's the same text fun person it has a bunch of comments right and we look at the date it's been up since August of 2018 so August September October November December January it's about four five months I didn't you know I guess it's been a while since I really looked for my courses on on YouTube so there's this one and then finally this intro to Django with Python for web development it only has eight views not very popular but still it's the entire hour and 20 minute course it's just infuriating so what do you do well udemy has a policy a program in place where they have contracted with a third party to follow these copyright claims on your behalf not just for YouTube but any website that we'll go after and it works especially well at YouTube I've had to do this a few times in the past

and it usually within a day or so these site these these get taken down if if you come back here and hit reload in a few hours you'll get a notice that says you know video removed for copyright violation or something you know so that's cool so you can go to let's see well that's not the URL I want hold on just one minute while I pull up okay so this is the URL that you want let me open another browser it is Yuda media shield comm /home and when you do that it will redirect you to this page which is reporting link busters comm for such form and then blah blah blah right so this is the form you want to fill out and here's it's a little tricky so you put your your name and your email and then the title lookup but it says if the drop-down doesn't show your title click here well the drop-down never shows so this form doesn't work you always wanted then click here all the token is

expire let's hit reload okay let's do it from this page then click here alright and then you get this page where you put your name you put your email and you want to use the email address that you have on file with you to me right you have the product name which is the title of your course you know learn sequel with Microsoft sequel server that's the title right for that course and then the URL of your course landing page right that's just the landing page on you to me and then finally the infringing URL so in this case I would copy this link ctrl C to copy it come over here ctrl V to paste it in and that's it so it's a pretty simple form to fill out it's not overly complicated it only takes a minute less than a minute 30 seconds and then you click the button and these link buster people will file a complaint with YouTube and YouTube will immediately take it down so I like

to keep these browser windows open oops I just closed that one I like to keep them open for a day or so and I'll click refresh every few hours you know every 5 hours or so you know or maybe at the beginning of the day I'll check in then at the end of the day I'll check just to make sure that they've actually been taken down and like I said I've had to do this many times and it's always quick it's always painless it's always very easy there's never any issue YouTube takes them down right right away so that's pretty good so like said this doesn't work just with YouTube if you find your course listed anywhere you can do this and it's free doesn't cost anything is the thing that you to me sort of provides for us but just to realize you're never ever ever going to find all of the pirated courses of yours I mean it's the Internet there's billions of websites you're just not

gonna find them so you can go crazy spend all your time searching for these and ruthlessly getting rid of them or you could do it like I do every few months just kind of check YouTube what I mean and do it like that because people are going to do what they're gonna do and you're never gonna stop at all and at the end of the day it's not really gonna affect you anyway because people that are watching these courses that are pirated weren't gonna buy your course anyway they're just they just weren't they'll go on to the next free one you know there are so many courses on so many things chances are you know if they're just not going to pay for it that's why they're looking for free ones you know I write best-selling coding books I've got several number one Amazon best-selling coding books and Ruby on Rails and you can find my book for free in the pdf version all over the

internet people steal it they download the Kindle version and they turn it into a PDF and they upload it you know you just can't stop piracy like that this the world we live in now the digital media is just so easy to copy and steal and pirate you're never going to so you could spend all your time going crazy you know working yourself up over this or you could just let it go and I recommend you just let it go because it's gonna happen you know every month every couple of months every few months do a sweep you know take the blatant ones and have them removed and then just move on spend more of your time focused on building new courses than worrying about the old ones that are getting pirated that's my opinion so that's it for today's report if you liked this episode be sure to smash the like button below subscribe to this channel and check out Courserapy.com for more tips tricks in

online course awesomeness my name is John Elder from Courserapy.com and we'll see you again tomorrow morning.
