What's going on guys welcome to the daily udemy income report the show where I talk about making money on you to me walk you through what's working for me and teach you how to do the same thing my name is John Elder from Courserapy.com and today is Tuesday January 22nd 2019 in today's episode I want to talk about how long your videos should be for you to me the length so before we do that let's look at yesterday's numbers as we always do so yesterday was the 21st pretty good day we had 20 courses sold 100 dollars and 39 cents and that came to five dollars and two cents per course which is quite a bit up on average from the few days before that 85 dollars and 49 cents big jump in refunds but we're getting towards the end of the month and that's normal now it looks like a lot almost twenty dollars but two or three of them were from the same person and they had bought the
courses at a higher price so my Commission for each one was six dollars so like three of those six dollars that's 18 bucks right there and then there was another one for you know a couple of dollars so that happens often people buy the courses at a higher price and then see them on sale a week later and this refund them that's not sure exactly that's what happened here but it could be wouldn't surprise me reviews only to the review system really quieted down I don't know if it's down or if we just didn't have a lot of reviews well take a look at those in just a minute so a month to date 1620 $1.99 pretty good four hundred and thirty courses sold we still have a week and a half less that's pretty good in the month a review use 165 promotional activities stay the same haven't sent out that next promo email just yet under twelve thousand eight hundred fourteen toll
enrollments and my average rating has popped up again that point zero one whatever to four point five two so yesterday pretty good day very happy with that so let's take a quick look at my profile page on udemy udemy.com /user first last John older three and forty five thousand nine hundred sixty three students thirty-seven courses and two thousand five hundred seven reviews we still have the best seller badge on the post-credits course these two courses have still not regained their highest whatever badge and we could see the sequel course that got highest-rated yesterday is still highest-rated today so that's very very cool good to see that so finally looking at the reviews we only had two yesterday this five star this course gave me a quick understanding of ruby programming language without spending too much time good review and this one four and a half stars very good
this one came in looks like just a couple hours ago we'll talk about that one tomorrow so one last thing before we talk about what I really want to talk about in this video is the YouTube videos the pirated videos that we've been talking about all last week have finally been removed so you can see I hit reload and this is the message you get video no but unavailable it's no longer available due to a copyright claim by udemy Inc as same thing for this one this one and this one so it's interesting that the copyright claim is you to me that means that the very first forum that I filled out you know the udemy forum that you know they have a service that they will take down your stuff for you that was the one that worked now yesterday in yesterday's episode I filed my own takedown request with YouTube directly because it had been like a week and the videos were still up so I
figured I just do it myself but it looks like it's that first one that actually has been processed by YouTube and taken down for whatever reason they just had a backlog or something or they were behind or they're taking a little bit longer to investigate now who knows but it looks like the videos have definitely been removed so that is good so for the rest of this video I want to talk about the length of your videos that you're making for you to me so you want to make a course on udemy or really anywhere you have to make videos and you have to make a decision how long those videos should be now my very first course was Ruby on Rails let's see this one right here and I made this a couple of years ago and the videos were all 15 20 minutes long each now the course itself was like five and a half hours so that worked out okay but I didn't know what I was doing then right now
I very highly recommend that your videos should be no more than three to five minutes each in length right if it goes over a little bit to six seven even eight from time to time that's perfectly fine but just aim for that sweet spot of three to five minutes and there's a couple of very very good reasons one you to me recommends that you do that and they know they do the testing they know which videos get watched more you know one twenty minute video or you know four five minute videos which has more participation by the student the shorter ones and it makes sense because people have short attention spans these days you don't have a lot of time you don't have half an hour to sit and watch a video but you have five minutes you have three minutes you can knock out a couple of short ones so it makes sense from that point of view but just from sort of a common sense each video should focus
on one thing don't try and explain ten things in each video just one thing and you can explain pretty much anything in three to five minutes if it's just one little thing right so you know people don't generally pause the videos you know they don't generally take notes they're just watching and they're trying to absorb and if you've got a twenty minute video and you're talking about ten different things it's too much for people to absorb right you know on the other hand if you've got a five minute video and you're talking about one specific thing boom they get that right and it's better because later on they're gonna come back they're gonna be working they're gonna go oh wait how do I do that and they'll go back and watch again if you got a bunch of 20 minute videos they got to scroll through 20 minutes to find the thing they're looking for no it's terrible that's no good
you don't want that on the other hand with my stuff you know I might have a three minute video five minute video on arrays later on they're like wait a second now how do I do it just go back to the table of contents look for the arrays video click it three minutes five minutes boom there it is it's easy it becomes a better tool for them when they can you know look up specific topics like that and that's only gonna happen if you have three to five minute videos now like I said I used to do long videos I just I didn't know any better it was years ago and then the reason why I actually stopped doing it that way is because I got contracted by another company to make a bunch of videos for them and one of their requirements was the videos have to be three to five minutes long and I was like that's weird I can't get anything in three two five minutes so I started thinking about
well how would I do that well each video has to be about one specific topic and when I did it like that oh yeah it became a lot easier it's easier to create the videos you know you're only talking for three to five minutes instead of if you're talking for twenty minutes and something goes wrong and you have to restart it and shoot that whole thing over again oh that's terrible if you're shooting little three minute videos and something goes wrong you shoot it again it's three minutes who cares right so it's just better for you know lots and lots of different reasons people interact better and you'd be surprised just how many times I get reviews left here on you know me to say something like you know I love the fact that the videos were only like five minutes long it's really easy for me to learn at that level okay great like it happens a lot it several times a week I get
that review wow these these videos were so short but right to the point and I understood immediately you know that's what you get when you have shorter videos so the final thing is it looks better right this is a product you're selling a product add to course it's an online course but it's a product and like any product you need to make it look as good as possible when you're selling it when you're trying to convince somebody to give you their money to buy this thing so I mean what sounds better to you my video has my course has four videos they're twenty minutes long each you know so it's an hour and 20 minutes or my course has 30 videos they're five minutes long each and it's hour and 20 minutes or whatever you know the 30 video course looks better it's the same amount of material it's the same exact material just broken up into more videos it looks better to somebody
buying nobody wants to spend money on a course it only has three or four videos right and if you're shooting for an hour hour and a half two hours of courses that's what it's going to be even if you have a two hour course it's still going to be what five six seven eight videos versus forty little ones right the forty little ones are always going to look better from a marketing point of view and it sounds stupid the world shouldn't be like that but the world is like that people will look at those two exact same courses and choose the one with 40 videos every single time even though they're the exact same course so it's better for the students it's better for you it's better for you to me udemy suggests that you you do smaller videos it's in they have a bunch of suggestions a bunch of like tutorials on how to make videos and stuff and that's what they suggest shorter videos and you
know every once in a while somebody complains these are only five minutes long each you know some people just complain about anything but overwhelmingly I get reviews saying wow these are great short to the point perfect right it's just better so that's what I suggest that's what I do it's easier to build these things to make these courses when they're smaller videos it's easier to edit them you know editing a 20 minute long video say it's 30 minutes long and you edit it down to 20 it takes a lot of computer processing power to edit a 30 minute video or a 20 minute video your computer will go real slow it'll start chugging it'll get hot physically get hot to the touch cuz things in there spin you know a three minute video BAM you can edit that out and render it in like five minutes right to render a twenty minute video it's gonna take a half hour an hour just to
render it after it's been edited just stick with shorter videos that's sort of the secret sauce that works with you to me and elsewhere and you can't go wrong so that's it for today's report if you liked this episode want to see more like it be sure to smash the like button below subscribe to the channel and check out Courserapy.com for more tips tricks and online course awesomeness my name is John Elder from Courserapy.com and we'll see you again tomorrow morning.
