What's going on guys welcome to the daily udemy income report sure where I talk about making money on you to me walk you through what's working for me and teach you how to do the same thing my name is John Elder from Courserapy.com and today is Friday January 25th in today's episode I want to talk about how to research your competition in order to make your own courses better and also your landing pages better to convert better so before we do that let's look at yesterday's stats as we always do so yesterday was the 24th Thursday we had 12 courses sold not very good but still 50 dollars and 31 cents which is not bad had about half of the day before and about half of the income of the day before but we had here and earned a port I cannot talk it's Friday I can't talk today earnings per course 4.19 cents still above the three that we've seen but sort of starting to edge a
little bit lower refunds to date stayed steady at eighty five dollars and 49 cents and we had six reviews we'll take a look at in just a minute so a month to date we're up to eighteen hundred thirty two dollars and thirty four cents pretty good four hundred seventy six courses sold so far this month and 190 reviews promotional activities stay the same and forty three dollars the same as the day before I'd hope that yesterday somebody else would click on my email that I sent out the day before but nobody did so we're gonna call this one done that's probably all we're gonna see as far as sales from that last promo email so that's how that goes one hundred twelve thousand eight hundred sixty total enrollments and my average rating is still at four point five two so taking a look at my profile page here on udemy udemy.com /user /john elder three we see forty six thousand
and nine students so we cracked that forty six thousand mark that's pretty cool thirty seven courses still in two thousand five hundred twenty eight reviews anything we really want to look at as always is that this Postgres course still has the bestseller badge these two courses down here still not regain their highest rated badge and if we go to page three we could see this sequel course still has its highest-rated batch fantastic you know I had a couple of really bad reviews three stars and then four star over the last couple of days that we looked at I didn't think it was gonna keep its highest rated badge but it has so far so that's pretty cool so real quick let's look at the reviews we got a five-star are just started with the course but the pace is good for some coming back to Django after a bit of a break that's cool on one hand I don't like how you to me asks for a review
after like ten minutes of the course that's not enough of the course especially at the beginning when you're doing introductory stuff in order for them to determine whether or not it's a good course so I don't know I don't really like that but in this case it turned out to be okay because even though they're just starting the course they gave me a five star review so we'll take it five star for the sequel course five star for the Postgres course another five stars five stars lots of five stars today five stars so pretty good reviews last couple days even though we only had a few seven yesterday they were all fantastically good so it will be messaging me so in this episode I want to spend just a few minutes talking about sort of how to check out your competition how to do some sort of competitive intelligence I do you know scanned what your course should be and get some
sort of information that you need to know to make decisions not just to make your course but to make it better to tweak the landing page and things like that so what you want to do is just search your category on you to me and see what you see so you need to do it a certain way though you can see right here I'm logged in right you don't want to be logged in when you do this because udemy gives different search results based on the user now they just started doing this a few months ago so not only do you want to not be logged in you want to use a completely different web browser a in kind in incognito mode so that kind of hides you online a little bit enough for these purposes and to do that you just go up here on Chrome and click the little button hang here and you just click this new incognito window and when you do this thing will pop up so you just search for you to me or just go
to udemy comm and you can see I'm still logged in here so we need to we need to logout and reload okay maybe do that first and then open up your incognito mode web browser right so what you want to do is just come here and search for your main your main category right so let's look at Django I like the Django courses I've got a bunch of them and you can see right off the bat we've got this best seller and the highest rated now mine used to be the highest rated last couple of weeks it disappeared off of that so it's no longer sitting here in this spot and but if you look down here boom boom boom there are three of mine right next to each other and then boom there's another one right next up to have four courses on the landing page of the Django category is fantastic right so that's really good but we're not we're pretty close to the top but like this guy right here is
beating me he's got 958 ratings I've only got 298 so many many more students and his is eighteen point five hours long where his mind's only two right this one here same thing six hundred ratings sixteen hundred ratings so right off the bat we see something that's interesting and that's that these people have a lot more students than me so that's something to keep in mind also their courses are much longer than mine that's also something to keep in mind but at the same time they have one say a 10-hour course and I have four to our courses so that's eight hours of material that's almost ten hours whereas they just have one little spot I've got one two three four spots right here on the first page and if we go to the second page or any more second page is another one of mine okay third page probably not that's about all I have right so I mean how cool is that to have that much real
estate taking up that's really good that's why my Django courses sells so well but notice look I've got my picture in all of them it makes it a lot easier to people for people to identify oh this is this guy's courses pictures in all of them so I definitely recommend you do that so anyway getting off-topic here like I said I want to spend a little bit of time talking about sort of competitive intelligence so what I would do first things first like just like this search in an incognito mode and then just pick one of these guys this one right here I would say well let's go this one the twitter-like app step by step with Django that's interesting and so what you want to do in fact let's go back and let's open this guy up in a new window and then that's also open which one did we save the Twitter one right so you'll want to compare like right here their title my title is this
big there's is a little bit longer tweet me build a Twitter like app step by step with Django so they use Django in the title so do I so you know you're gonna look at things like that then look at the subtitle learn database-driven web development with Django and Python there's this learn Django 1.1 jQuery and bootstrap step by step by building a real project that works like Twitter so that is a more specific title right there very very specific whereas mine is just learned database driven web development Django and Python so if I was tweaking my site I would probably change this to Django 2.0 or whatever there are Django 1.1 some very old version it was last updated in 2016 so this is almost well it's two years and a month or two old going on three years old right so that's interesting to know right mine was last updated in November of 2018 right so that's that's cool now
next I'll go to this section right here what you'll learn and just compare the things that they've done to the things that you know how you list yours are they similar can you do something a little more similar I'm not saying you copy them ever but I'm saying like you know mine is introductory Django what do they say build a real service like Twitter right a great bootstrap working with Ajax they're very specific in the technologies they're using whereas I'm not as specific I just talk about sort of oh we're gonna use static image files you're gonna create page views and install Django right so I might go back and add more specific technologies that we use we're gonna use Django two we're gonna use you know this database we're gonna use get bootstrap or we're gonna use bootstrap from get bootstrap of town blah blah go through there and be more specific so you might do
that then you I kind of sometimes look at how they break their thing apart but I don't spend a lot of time looking at that next what you want to do really is look at the description and look at this their description is not particularly large right I'm a big proponent of writing as much stuff as you can for your description so you find a big thick paragraphs right but this guy here has just done bullet points maybe that's better so I might test that sometime I might convert my big paragraphs into bullet points and I do have a couple of bullet points but you know not not as many right and again what are they doing they're saying very specific things you're gonna learn Ajax you learn jQuery you know you're going to use hash tag and a great bootstrap there Ajax Django rest framework you know I'm very specific about what you're gonna learn then you come down here to who
this course is for entrepreneurs Python programmers Django developers and we're looking to build a real project motivated would-be developers where as I say who this court look at this I only have two things right so I might go back and add some more things so that's the sort of thing you're gonna do is the featured review pretty good and then come down here and look one of my other ones is showing up these two are showing up what's showing up for this guy none of my other ones these or looks like that Justin Mitchell same dude I guess uh finally you're look at this because sometimes people read this stuff look at this he's got a lot of stuff written there for his sort of bio whereas my bio is just this big so I might go there go through there and add more stuff so that's really all all the risks to this you just want to sort of compare your landing page to the landing
pages of your competitors if your course isn't doing well at all I would compare your course content go through look at the sections look how you break it up then go look at your competitors um just see where you go here we go how they break it up right how they name things you see very similar right they just have more of them all right so that's really all there is to it it just takes time it's real easy to do it just takes time and as you go through don't just do one course right go through all of them listed on the front page are there similarities between all of them what are they doing the same are you doing that same thing well you should be right I don't know what that thing is you have to read all that stuff and these things will pop out to you you know start to oh that's you know interesting so you know it takes a lot of work but you should be doing this stuff
you need to understand your category right you need to understand it helps you understand like what people want if all of the courses on here all say a same thing it's probably because the people taking the course want that same thing well are you teaching that same thing in your course you should be this is how you find these things out so you know it's just elbow grease takes a little bit of work but it's fun to kind of you know Slough through there and read all the things and see what other people are doing and try and maybe copy a little but don't I mean don't just copy but you know do something similar like that guy was doing bullet points I might try bullet points I'm not gonna copy his bullet points I'm gonna come up with my own but they're gonna be sort of similar to his if I did that you know stuff like that so that's really all there is to it so that's it for
